Alan J. Abramson directs the Nonprofit Sector and Philanthropy Program at the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC. In this capacity, he oversees a variety of research and dialogue-oriented initiatives focused on critical nonprofit issues.
Before joining the Aspen Institute in 1994, Mr. Abramson was on the research staff of the Urban Institute. He has served on many nonprofit boards and advisory committees, and is currently secretary of the board of the National Council of Nonprofit Associations, a coalition of 40 state-based nonprofit associations. He is also an adjunct professor in Georgetown University's graduate public policy program, where he teaches a seminar on the nonprofit sector. He also serves on the Board of the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington.
Mr. Abramson received his Ph.D. in political science from Yale University and his B.A. from Wesleyan University. He is the author and co-author of numerous books and papers, and his work has twice won awards from the American Political Science Association. He has also been named among the 50 most influential leaders in the nonprofit sector by the NonProfit Times, one of the leading trade publications for the nonprofit sector.
Alan and his partner and son live in Washington's U Street neighborhood.
