Innovation Award - Finalists Announced!

The
NPower Technology Innovation Award honors nonprofits in the Metro
Washington, DC area whose innovative use of technology has helped them
improve key aspects of their operations and more effectively fulfill
their missions. This year's finalists are: DC LEARNs, Mary's Center,
and National Student Partnerships. The winner will be announced at
this year's luncheon, to be held on Friday, November 17th at the
Washington Post HQ located at 1150
15th Street, NW, from 11:30am until 2:00pm.
Hundreds of leaders from the area's most innovative private sector
companies and nonprofit organizations are expected to attend.

2006
Catalogue for Philanthropy Selects NPower!

NPower
Greater DC Region has been selected as a featured charity in the 2006-07
Catalogue for Philanthropy. The Catalogue's web site is now launched (see
link below) and the hardcopy of the Catalogue was been sent to thousands
of area residents. Supported by local foundations (Harman, Meyer,
Cafritz, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Marriott and Fowler) as a service to
the community, the Catalogue profiles environmental, cultural,
educational, human services, and international organizations. Over 30,000
individuals and hundreds of foundations will receive copies of the
Catalogue this year. To date, the Catalogue has helped to raise over $2
million in pledges and gifts for local nonprofits.

Tech Savvy Awards

Local
nonprofits might want to explore the Verizon Tech Savvy Awards. The awards
recognize programs that demystify technology for families and enable
parents to better guide their children in the use of technology for the
purpose of learning. It is designed to assist grassroots, community-
based nonprofit organizations, libraries, and schools to incorporate
information communications technology literacy as a component and
enhancement of literacy. There will be four regional awards of $5,000
each and one national award of $25,000. Deadline for submittal is January
12, 2007. There is more information and a nomination form on the website

Explorer 7- Should I Download and Install?
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) has been released (and there is a LOT
of information available at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx). IE7 is available now
as a free download; however NPower recommends NOT installing this update
until you’ve had a chance to discuss potential issues with your
technology consultant.
You probably know that there are many nonprofit specific tools that need
an internet browser to work. Products that rely on Internet Explorer to
function include QuickBooks, Raiser’s Edge, Financial Edge, Elligence,
and many other web-based applications. These applications may or may not
be compatible with this new version. To uninstall IE 7 and automatically
revert to IE 6, find instructions here:
